Imo LP Crisis Deepens as 305 Executives Threaten Mass Defection

“Fresh tension has erupted within the Imo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP), as a looming leadership battle threatens to tear apart the party’s structure ahead of the next electoral cycle. In what party insiders describe as a dangerous power struggle, no fewer than 27 Local Government chairmen, 305 ward executives, and several stakeholders have vowed to abandon the party if an alleged move to replace State Chairman, Chief Charles Ugochukwu, succeeds.”

“A major crisis is brewing in the Imo State chapter of the Labour Party as 27 Local Government chairmen, 305 ward executives, and party stakeholders threaten mass defection over an alleged plot to replace the state chairman, Chief Charles Ugochukwu, with the party’s Legal Adviser, Barr. Ezerioha Nelson. Party leaders warned that any attempt to alter the existing leadership structure could trigger litigations and weaken the party ahead of future elections.”

The Imo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) is currently facing a deepening internal crisis that could undermine the party’s strength and electoral prospects ahead of future elections.

The unfolding controversy is linked to an alleged leadership tussle involving the party’s Legal Adviser, Barr. Ezerioha Nelson, who is reportedly seeking to assume the position of State Chairman in opposition to the current chairman, Chief Charles Ugochukwu.

Chief Charles Ugochukwu, who hails from the Orlu Senatorial Zone, emerged as the State Chairman following the elevation of former chairman, Mazi Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri, to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

However, party stakeholders have accused Barr. Ezerioha Nelson, an indigene of Oru East Local Government Area, of attempting to destabilise the existing structure and unity within the party despite the chairmanship position allegedly being zoned to the Orlu Zone.
According to reports, the 27 Local Government chairmen, 305 ward chairmen, and other party executives have warned the leadership against any attempt to remove Chief Charles Ugochukwu and alter the current leadership arrangement involving Mazi Excel Ochiama-Nwaneri.

The aggrieved party leaders reportedly threatened mass defection and legal action should the alleged plot succeed.

“There are persons who emerged victorious during the congresses recently conducted, and that process should be respected unless the intention is to destroy the party in Imo State.

Aside from mass defections, several litigations will follow if such action is taken,” the stakeholders warned.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, the Labour Party Chairman in Oru East Local Government Area further declared that any leadership change favouring Barr. Ezerioha Nelson could lead to the collapse of the party structure in the area.

“If that happens, there will be no Labour Party in Oru East because all foundation members will defect to another political party,” he stated.

Meanwhile, other party members argued that Barr. Ezerioha Nelson’s emergence could raise political concerns because he hails from the same local government area as the incumbent Imo State Governor and the APC State Chairman.

Some anonymous party sources also alleged that Nelson had not been actively involved in Labour Party activities in the state until recently, raising suspicions among members over the motives behind the alleged leadership move.

Political observers believe the growing internal crisis, if not urgently addressed, could weaken the Labour Party’s structure in Imo State and affect its chances in future elections.
