2027: You Can’t Back Otti and Seek APC Ticket” — Stakeholder Fires Eric Opah in Abia
“Fresh cracks have emerged within the Abia State chapter of the APC after a party stakeholder openly questioned the loyalty and political intentions of the governorship hopeful, Mr. Eric Opah. In a strongly worded open letter, Chief Don Ugwumba Nmeregini accused Opah of maintaining close ties with Governor Alex Otti’s administration while allegedly positioning himself for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections. The development has triggered renewed debate over party loyalty, transparency, and internal power struggles within the opposition party in Abia State.”
“A fresh controversy has erupted in the Abia APC after stakeholder Chief Don Ugwumba Nmeregini accused governorship hopeful Eric Opah of anti-party activities and divided loyalty. Nmeregini alleged that Opah, who reportedly supports Governor Alex Otti and benefits from government contracts, cannot simultaneously seek the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 election while backing the incumbent administration.”
A concerned stakeholder of the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Don Ugwumba Nmeregini, has raised serious concerns over the loyalty and political alignment of Mr. Eric Opah ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
In an open letter dated May 10, 2026, and made available to Famousreporters.com, today , Monday, May 11, Nmeregini questioned whether an individual allegedly linked to Governor Alex Otti’s administration could legitimately aspire to fly the APC governorship flag in Abia State.
The letter, titled “Questions Abia APC Must Answer About Loyalty, Contradcting, and 2027,” stressed the need for accountability, transparency, and internal party discipline as preparations for the next general election intensify.
According to him, “Abia State deserves an opposition that is clear, united, and accountable to the people. That is why recent developments around Mr. Eric Opah deserve honest conversation, not silence.”
Nmeregini alleged that Opah is widely known as a vocal supporter of Governor Alex Otti and is reportedly a major contractor under the current administration. He further claimed that a resurfaced video allegedly showed Opah publicly endorsing the governor for a second term in 2027.
He argued that the situation raises concerns about conflict of interest and political loyalty within the APC.
The stakeholder asked: “Can a person who publicly campaigns for the incumbent governor simultaneously claim to lead the party tasked with unseating that same government? How does that align with APC’s goals in Abia?”
He further warned that allowing individuals perceived to have close ties with the ruling government to emerge as opposition candidates could damage the credibility of the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Additionally, Nmeregini accused the Abia State Government of failing to provide detailed public records regarding contract awards and state spending despite campaigning on transparency and accountability.
“At a time when APC needs to present a credible alternative to rescue Abia from mismanagement and political shenanigans, the party must guard against internal actors whose public alignment contradicts their private ambition,” he stated.
The APC stakeholder, therefore, called on the party leadership at both the state and national levels to scrutinise the political affiliations and business dealings of all governorship aspirants seeking the party’s ticket.
He also urged the party to establish strict loyalty and conflict-of-interest standards for aspirants ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
Furthermore, Nmeregini alleged that Opah had remained inactive in party affairs over the years, accusing him of failing to support APC activities financially or participate in critical meetings and fundraising programmes.
“Chief Opah’s previous support to APC should also be called to question because in the past four years, he never donated a kobo to the running of the party, nor paid rent for the party office accommodation, and never responded to the party’s invitations to meetings and fundraising,” he alleged.
“How on earth will such a passive member become a flag bearer of the party overnight?” he queried.
He maintained that Abia people were tired of “recycled politics and backroom deals,” insisting that the APC must clearly define where its aspirants stand if the party hopes to gain public trust in 2027.
