Ikwuano/Umuahia Constituency:
Umuahia South Deserves Next Reps Seat – Equity, Zoning Debate Deepens

By Chimamanda Ezekiel, Umuahia North.

“Tension is rising in Abia State as the battle for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency seat intensifies ahead of party primaries. At the center of the debate is a critical question of equity: should Umuahia South finally take its turn, or will political interests override the long-standing zoning arrangement? The answer could shape not just representation—but the future of party unity in the constituency.”

“Question: Who should produce the next representative in Ikwuano/Umuahia Constituency?
Answer: Based on the long-standing zoning arrangement, Umuahia South is expected to produce the next representative to ensure fairness, balance, and equitable power rotation among the constituent areas.”

Following the sale of nomination forms by the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Nigeria, political activities have intensified. Aspirants are mobilizing. Consultations are ongoing. Stakeholders are actively engaging ahead of the primaries.

In Abia State, the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency has become a major focus. The growing number of aspirants—especially from Umuahia North—has triggered fresh debate over zoning, fairness, and equity.

At the center of this debate is a simple question:
Is it truly the turn of Umuahia North to produce the next representative?
Historically, representation in the constituency has followed an informal zoning arrangement. This system promotes fairness by rotating power among the different areas. It has helped maintain balance and inclusion over time.

Past representatives largely respected this pattern. For example, Rt. Hon. Emeka Atuma served only one term in line with this understanding. Earlier trends also reflected a one-term culture.

However, the case of Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo from Ikwuano stands out as an exception. His second term was influenced by unique political circumstances at the time. These included strategic alignments and broader political interests within the state. Reports suggest that key stakeholders supported this decision, including the administration of former governor Theodore Orji.

It is important to note that this was an exception—not a new rule.
Using that precedent to justify another turn for Umuahia North risks distorting the original principle of zoning. It weakens the foundation of fairness that has guided the constituency for years.

Based on equity, Umuahia South should now produce the next representative. Ignoring this could increase political tension. It may also erode trust among the constituent blocs.
This is not just a political issue. It is about protecting a system built on inclusion, stability, and mutual respect.

This is a call for reflection. The people of Ikwuano and Umuahia North must consider the implications of denying Umuahia South its rightful turn.

Such a move would weaken the principle of fairness. It would also sideline a zone filled with capable and proven individuals.
Umuahia South is not lacking in credible leaders. Across its communities are individuals who have demonstrated leadership and compassion—even without holding public office.

Many have contributed meaningfully to society. They have built roads. They have sponsored education. They have awarded scholarships and provided housing. Others have empowered people both within and outside Nigeria.

These actions show a clear capacity for leadership at the Green Chamber.
However, the current approach by Umuahia North is widely seen as outdated and if not efficiently addressed, it could fuel resentment and distrust. This may ultimately affect the electoral chances of the APC.
Achieving balance now is critical. It serves the collective interest of all stakeholders.

This is more than politics. It is a moral question.
Equity must not only be preached—it must be practiced.
Now is the time to uphold fairness by allowing Umuahia South to produce the next House of Representatives member for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.
Justice delayed in zoning is justice denied in representation.
