Workers’ Day 2026: FENRAD Demands Pension Reform in Abia

By Charity Uwakwe

“For thousands of retirees in Abia State, Workers’ Day 2026 is not a celebration—but a painful reminder of unpaid pensions, broken promises, and deepening hardship. While salaries may now arrive on time, many former workers say they have been abandoned in retirement, sparking renewed calls for urgent government action.”

“Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has called on the Abia State Government to urgently clear pension arrears and reform welfare systems, warning that delayed gratuities are pushing retirees into hardship despite improved salary payments.”

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development has joined millions of Nigerians in commemorating the 2026 Workers’ Day, a moment set aside to honour the resilience, sacrifice, and contributions of workers to national development.
However, the organisation stressed that “true workers’ welfare goes beyond the timely payment of salaries.”

While acknowledging recent improvements in salary payments under the administration of Alex Otti, FENRAD noted in a statement signed by Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the Executive Director,
that such progress, although commendable, “does not in itself constitute comprehensive welfare for workers.”
“Timely salaries are important, but they are only one part of a broader social contract,” the group stated.

Growing Concern Over Pension Delays

More critically, the organisation expressed grave concern over the continued delay in the payment of pension arrears and gratuities in Abia State.

According to FENRAD, many retirees—after decades of dedicated service—are now facing prolonged economic hardship.

“These individuals deserve not uncertainty, but security and dignity in retirement,” the statement emphasised.

Key Demands

FENRAD, therefore, urged the Abia State Government to take urgent and measurable steps:

Publish a transparent, detailed, and time-bound roadmap for clearing all outstanding pension arrears and gratuities.
Provide immediate relief interventions for the most affected pensioners pending full payment.
Reform pension administration systems to ensure efficiency, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

Review and strengthen workers’ welfare policies, including promotions, allowances, and wage adjustments in line with economic realities.

FENRAD’s Position

The organisation reiterated that workers’ welfare must be holistic and continuous, extending beyond active service into retirement.

“A system that pays salaries but neglects pension obligations undermines the principles of fairness and social justice,” FENRAD stated.
It further stressed: “Pensions and gratuities are not privileges—they are earned rights and binding obligations.”

According to the group, any delay in payment “represents not only administrative inefficiency but also a breach of trust between government and citizens.”

Call to Action

As a non-partisan civil society organisation, FENRAD reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The group pledged to continue monitoring developments, engaging stakeholders, and advocating policies that protect workers and retirees.

“This Workers’ Day must serve as a turning point—moving from promises to practical, measurable, and sustained reforms,” it added.

Conclusion

Workers deserve dignity.
Pensioners deserve justice.
“The time to act is now.”
