Union Bank of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian teachers and advancing the nation’s education sector at the launch of the 12th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOTY) Competition held in Lagos.
The Bank, now in its third consecutive year as a partner of the prestigious initiative, joined Nigerian Breweries Plc, the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, educators, and other stakeholders at the event. The gathering featured a panel discussion focused on how educational support can improve learning outcomes for both teachers and students.
Speaking on behalf of Union Bank, the Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, emphasised that education remains a strategic priority for the institution.
“At Union Bank, we believe education is not a social obligation. It is a strategic investment,” Aluko said.
“A nation that does not invest in its teachers and its learners is borrowing from its own future, and we are in the business of building futures, not mortgaging them.”
According to her, the Bank’s flagship education initiative, Edu360, which operates under the UnionCares platform, reflects the institution’s long-term commitment to educational advancement.
She explained that Edu360 addresses the entire education value chain by expanding access to learning opportunities for children in underserved communities, supporting teachers, promoting digital literacy and STEM education, and equipping young people with skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Furthermore, Aluko urged financial institutions to move beyond traditional corporate donations and adopt a broader role in strengthening educational ecosystems.
“Financial institutions need to stop thinking of ourselves as donors and start thinking of ourselves as ecosystem builders,” she said.
“We can embed financial literacy into school curricula, design products that help parents save for their children’s education, and convene policymakers, educators and the private sector around shared goals. Above all, we can show up consistently, not only when it suits our brand calendars.”
She also stressed that sustainable progress in education requires continuous collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders. In addition, she highlighted the significance of the competition’s ₦100 million grand prize as a strong signal of commitment to recognising and rewarding excellence in teaching.
With twelve successful editions and more than 300 teachers recognised nationwide, Aluko described the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition as a shining example of consistency and impact, values that align closely with Union Bank’s Edu360 programme.
Delivering a message to educators across Nigeria, she said:
“To every teacher in this country, what you do is not small. Your story deserves to be told, and Nigeria needs to know your name.”
Union Bank noted that its participation in the initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education. The Bank added that the partnership reflects its broader commitment to sustainable development and positive social impact across the communities it serves.
As Nigeria continues to seek solutions to educational challenges, stakeholders say initiatives such as the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition remain critical in motivating teachers, improving learning outcomes, and strengthening the future of the country’s education system.
