Policy Without Politics Podcast: Why Nigeria’s Good Policies Keep Failing
What if Nigeria’s biggest problem isn’t bad policies—but the failure to implement them? A new thought-leadership podcast hosted by renowned financial expert Mustafa Chike-Obi and development economist Dr. Ken Ikpe is opening up the conversations many Nigerians have long demanded. Through honest, evidence-based discussions, the podcast explains how government decisions affect businesses, jobs, investments and everyday life.
Policy Without Politics is a newly launched weekly YouTube podcast hosted by Mustafa Chike-Obi and Dr. Ken Ikpe. The programme examines how public policies influence Nigeria’s economy, governance, businesses and daily life through practical, non-partisan discussions focused on implementation, accountability and sustainable development.
A new thought-leadership podcast, “Policy Without Politics,” has been launched to deepen public understanding of the policies shaping economies, businesses, markets and everyday life.
Hosted by respected financial expert Mustafa Chike-Obi and development economist Dr. Ken Ikpe, the weekly YouTube podcast offers clear, evidence-based conversations on governance, public policy, economic development and the business environment. The hosts also invite viewers to subscribe for fresh weekly insights.
Unlike politically driven debates, “Policy Without Politics” focuses on explaining how decisions made in government directly affect businesses, investments, communities and ordinary citizens. Although the discussions are rooted in Africa’s realities, they also examine issues with global relevance.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Dr. Ken Ikpe said:
“Policy touches every life, every business and every economy. Our goal is to make these conversations accessible, practical and useful, so that more people can understand how policy decisions translate into real outcomes.”
The podcast’s debut episode, “Policy vs Implementation: Why Nigeria’s Good Ideas Keep Failing,” tackles one of the country’s most pressing development challenges. The hosts examine whether Nigeria’s biggest obstacle lies in weak policy design, poor implementation, or a deeper failure of accountability and political will.
Among the major issues discussed are fuel subsidy removal, electricity pricing, exchange rates, health insurance, education, IMF recommendations, telecommunications and social safety nets.
During one of the episode’s most memorable moments, Mustafa Chike-Obi challenged the belief that welfare spending alone can drive development.
“Charity is good, but you can only give charity when you have it. When you have limited resources, you must produce first, then be charitable later. Charity first never leads to production,” he said.
The conversations continue in other thought-provoking episodes.
In “The Importance of an Economic Adviser in National Government,” the hosts explain why independent economic advisers are essential for effective planning, policy coordination and sustainable national growth.
Meanwhile, “Why Do African Teams Concede in the 86th Minute?” uses football as a case study to explore discipline, leadership, execution and the enormous economic opportunities within Africa’s sports industry.
Another episode, “Introducing PWP: Why Good Policy Fails to Change Lives,” lays the foundation for the series by examining why many well-designed policies fail to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
The podcast draws additional credibility from the distinguished careers of its hosts.
Mustafa Chike-Obi has more than 40 years of experience in investment banking and financial services. He served as the pioneer Chief Executive Officer of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and previously held senior positions at Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns and Guggenheim Partners.
He graduated with a First Class degree in Mathematics from the University of Lagos and earned an MBA from Stanford University.
Similarly, Dr. Ken Ikpe brings over three decades of experience in business leadership, strategic advisory, advertising and brand management. He is the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Insight Redefini Group, one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s leading marketing communications and consumer consulting firms.
He holds a PhD in Development Economics from the Academy of Sciences, School of African Studies, Moscow. He is also associated with the School of Media and Communication at Pan-Atlantic University and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Marketing as well as the advertising profession in Nigeria.
Explaining the mission behind the initiative, Mustafa Chike-Obi said:
“We are not interested in politics for its own sake. We are interested in what works, why it works, why good ideas fail, and what must change if policy is to deliver real progress.”
With its combination of practical experience, independent analysis and real-world perspectives, “Policy Without Politics” provides policymakers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, students and citizens with a valuable platform to better understand the ideas and decisions shaping Nigeria’s future and Africa’s economic development.
Viewers are encouraged to watch the episodes, share them within their networks and subscribe to the Policy Without Politics YouTube channel for weekly conversations on governance, business, economic policy and Africa’s development.
