2027 Presidency: NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to Southern Nigeria, Sets Condition for 2031

“Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed a major shake-up on Saturday as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria during its national convention in Abuja. The decision, which comes amid the high-profile defections of Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and 17 federal lawmakers into the party, has triggered fresh conversations about power rotation, opposition unity, and the battle for Aso Rock ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

“The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term. The decision was announced during the party’s national convention in Abuja, where party leaders also resolved that the 2031 presidential ticket would be reserved for Northern Nigeria.”

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, signaling a major political realignment ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached on Saturday during the party’s national convention held in Abuja, where party leaders, stakeholders, and newly defected political figures gathered to deliberate on the future direction of the opposition movement.

Confirming the development, the party wrote on its official social media handle: “NDC presidential ticket is zoned to the South.”

The party further disclosed that the 2027 presidential ticket would be for a single four-year term, while the 2031 presidential slot has been allocated to Northern Nigeria in line with its zoning arrangement and power-sharing principle.

The convention comes at a crucial moment for the party following a wave of defections from rival political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Among the prominent political figures currently aligning with the NDC are former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, both of whom recently joined the party amid growing calls for opposition unity ahead of 2027.

The convention is also expected to ratify key resolutions earlier proposed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Issues slated for deliberation include zoning arrangements, amendments to the party constitution, and the election of new national executives.

Meanwhile, the party has continued to gain momentum in the National Assembly.

No fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives recently defected from the ADC to the NDC. Their defections were formally announced during plenary sessions at the House of Representatives.

Lawmakers who joined the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, Munachim Umezuruike, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omoruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.

The defections came barely two days after Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso formally received their NDC membership cards following a closed-door meeting with party leaders in Abuja.

The opposition leaders were welcomed into the party by former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, amid cheers from party supporters.

Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party platform, reportedly cited internal crises, political interference, insecurity, and increasing hostility within opposition structures as key reasons for leaving the ADC, which he joined in December 2025.

The former governor lamented what he described as a “toxic political environment,” stressing that intimidation and pressure have continued to frustrate individuals genuinely committed to public service and national development.

Political analysts believe the latest developments within the NDC could significantly reshape opposition politics and intensify the battle for the presidency ahead of the 2027 elections.
