Morocco Beat Canada 3-0 to Become First Team in FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals

History was made in Houston as Morocco delivered a ruthless second-half masterclass to defeat Canada 3-0, becoming the first nation to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. Inspired by Azzedine Ounahi’s brilliant brace, the Atlas Lions once again proved they are a genuine force on football’s biggest stage.

Morocco’s remarkable World Cup journey continues. The Atlas Lions produced a clinical second-half performance to overwhelm Canada 3-0 in Houston, becoming the first team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. Inspired by Azzedine Ounahi’s brilliant brace, Morocco once again proved why it remains one of international football’s most exciting teams.

Morocco defeated Canada 3-0 in Houston on Saturday to become the first nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice, while Soufiane Rahimi added a late goal as the Atlas Lions advanced to face the winner of France vs Paraguay in the last eight.

Morocco booked its place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Canada in Houston on Saturday, becoming the first nation to reach the last eight of the tournament.

A second-half brace from Azzedine Ounahi in the 50th and 82nd minutes, followed by a stoppage-time strike from Soufiane Rahimi, sealed a convincing victory for the Atlas Lions despite Canada’s impressive display for much of the contest.

With the victory, Morocco will face the winner of France and Paraguay in Thursday’s quarterfinal at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

Moreover, the result reinforces Morocco’s impressive record at major international tournaments. After reaching the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and being crowned African champions earlier this year amid controversy, the North Africans have continued to establish themselves among football’s elite.

Canada Dominate Early but Fail to Capitalise

Canada made a bright start despite leaving star defender Alphonso Davies on the bench.

The North Americans pressed aggressively from the opening whistle and created several dangerous opportunities during the opening stages.

Their best chance arrived in the 11th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi capitalised on a high press to break through on goal. However, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced an outstanding save to deny the Villarreal forward.

Morocco’s problems deepened in the 23rd minute when influential midfielder Ismael Saibari, who recently completed a move to Bayern Munich, limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Although Morocco struggled to create meaningful chances early on, the hydration break helped the Atlas Lions regain some composure. Rahimi registered Morocco’s first shot in the 29th minute, but his effort was comfortably saved by Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau.

Tensions later flared in the 39th minute when Achraf Hakimi pushed Richie Laryea, triggering a confrontation that resulted in yellow cards for both players from referee Michael Oliver.

The first half ended with several bookings, reflecting the intensity of a fiercely contested encounter.

Ounahi Inspires Morocco After the Break
Canada resumed the second half with the same attacking intent. Nevertheless, Morocco struck against the run of play.

Following a foul by Luc De Fougerolles, Hakimi delivered a clever free-kick to Ounahi, who curled a superb effort into the bottom-right corner to give Morocco a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

The breakthrough transformed the match.
Although Canada continued searching for an equaliser, Morocco gradually took control of proceedings.

Canada briefly appealed for a penalty after Tajon Buchanan went down inside the penalty area. However, the assistant referee had already flagged for offside, ending the controversy before the referee Oliver was required to make a decision.

Meanwhile, Canada’s pressure continued, with Jonathan David sending a dangerous free-kick over the crossbar before Buchanan forced another excellent save from Bounou with a powerful long-range strike.

Atlas Lions Finish in Style

Morocco effectively sealed victory in the 82nd minute through another moment of brilliance.

Brahim Díaz produced an excellent run into the penalty area before laying the ball perfectly into Ounahi’s path. The midfielder calmly finished to complete his brace and put the contest beyond Canada’s reach.

Rahimi almost added a third moment later when his header struck the crossbar.

However, the forward eventually found the net in stoppage time, firing beyond Crépeau to complete an emphatic 3-0 victory and send Morocco into the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in style.

The result underlined Morocco’s clinical finishing and defensive resilience. While Canada enjoyed long spells of possession and created numerous chances, the Atlas Lions demonstrated that efficiency in front of goal often proves decisive on football’s biggest stage.
