Online Media Now Leads News Dissemination in Nigeria, GOMEP-NG Urges FG to Recognise Digital Publishers

Nigeria’s media landscape is changing faster than ever. As millions increasingly depend on digital platforms for instant news and public information, the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) says it is time for the Federal Government to recognise the growing influence of online journalism in shaping public discourse and national development.

Nigeria’s digital news revolution is accelerating. With millions relying on online platforms for breaking news every day, GOMEP-NG says the time has come for the Federal Government to fully recognise online media as a key partner in national development and public communication.

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has urged the Federal Government to give greater recognition to online media, saying digital journalism has become Nigeria’s leading platform for news dissemination. The association said millions of Nigerians now rely on online news platforms for real-time information, making digital media an essential partner in governance, public communication, and national development.

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has called on the Federal Government to accord greater recognition and support to online media practitioners, declaring that digital journalism has emerged as the country’s leading platform for news dissemination.

In a statement jointly signed by the National President of GOMEP-NG, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, and the National Secretary, Comrade Clinton Uba, the association said the rapid expansion of online media has fundamentally transformed how Nigerians access and consume news.

According to the statement, “millions of Nigerians now rely on digital platforms for real-time news, public affairs, and timely information,” underscoring the growing influence of online journalism in shaping public opinion and national conversations.

While acknowledging the enduring relevance of newspapers, radio, and television, GOMEP-NG noted that online media has become an indispensable complement to traditional outlets by providing faster access to information and broader audience engagement through social media and other digital channels.

Otiti disclosed that the guild comprises more than 270 online media editors and publishers across Nigeria, describing its members as grassroots information managers dedicated to credible journalism, public enlightenment, and national development.

He stressed that the increasing reach and influence of digital news platforms make them strategic partners in communicating government policies and programmes to citizens nationwide.

The GOMEP-NG president, therefore, urged relevant government agencies, policymakers, and stakeholders to deepen collaboration with online media organisations in public awareness campaigns, policy communication, and development initiatives.

According to him, stronger engagement with digital publishers would enhance information dissemination, improve public participation, and promote transparency in governance.

Otiti further reaffirmed the guild’s commitment to ethical journalism, professionalism, accuracy, and responsible information dissemination. He also expressed the association’s readiness to partner with government institutions, development organisations, and the private sector to advance good governance, accountability, and sustainable national development.
