2027: Who Is Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, YPP Candidate for Orlu/Orsu/Oru East?

His journey began in student leadership. Years later, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka is taking another step into electoral politics as he seeks to represent Orlu, Orsu and Oru East in 2027.

Igboayaka O. Igboayaka is a philosopher, youth leader, human rights advocate and YPP candidate for Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency in the 2027 House of Representatives election.

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, attention is increasingly turning to the candidates seeking to represent Orlu, Orsu and Oru East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Among those in the race is Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, a philosopher, media and community development consultant, human rights advocate and youth leader who is contesting the constituency’s federal seat on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Recent reports on the 2027 race identify Igboayaka as the YPP candidate for the Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency.

Who is Igboayaka O. Igboayaka?

Igboayaka hails from Umuna in Orlu, Imo State. He is a philosopher by academic training and has developed professional interests in media, community development, human resources development and public affairs.

His public profile has also been shaped by his involvement in youth advocacy, sociocultural issues, human rights and political participation.

His leadership journey dates back to his university years at Imo State University (IMSU), where he participated in student leadership and community-oriented activities.

During his time at the university, he served as Traditional Prime Minister of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Undergraduate Forum and also held the position of Director of Transportation in the Imo State University Students’ Union Government (SUG).

These roles provided early exposure to student representation, organisation, administration and community engagement.

From student leadership to partisan politics

Igboayaka later expanded his activities into partisan politics.

In the 2015 general election, he contested for the Orlu State Constituency seat in the Imo State House of Assembly under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Between 2016 and 2018, he served as Secretary of the Labour Party in Imo State, before becoming the party’s Organising Secretary, a position he reportedly held from 2018 to 2022.

His involvement with the Labour Party also brought him into political organisation, grassroots mobilisation and public communication.

Contemporary reporting from 2017 identified Igboayaka as the Labour Party’s State Organising Secretary in Imo State.

Igboayaka and Ohanaeze Youth Council

One of the most prominent aspects of Igboayaka’s public career has been his involvement with the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC).

He emerged as National President of the organisation at its 2019 national convention. Reports from the period identified him as the newly elected national president of OYC.

Since then, he has featured prominently in public conversations concerning youth development, Igbo identity, social justice, security, political participation and the socioeconomic development of the South-East.

In 2019, for example, Igboayaka spoke publicly on insecurity and other issues affecting communities in the region.

His activities have also included advocacy around human rights and the welfare of vulnerable members of society. In October 2019, Punch reported that he led the Ohanaeze Youth Council in calling for the release of a woman who had spent years awaiting trial.

Human rights and community advocacy

Beyond electoral politics, Igboayaka describes himself as a Human Rights Advocate and Social Crusader, with interests spanning social justice, community development and the advancement of young people.

His advocacy has frequently focused on the participation of youths in public affairs and the need for greater attention to issues affecting communities across the South-East.

He also identifies as a Pan-Africanist, with an expressed interest in the political and socioeconomic development of Africans, particularly the Igbo people.

His 2027 House of Representatives ambition

Igboayaka’s current political ambition is to represent Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2027.

Recent reports state that he is contesting under the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and that his name appears on the published list of candidates for the constituency.

The candidate has presented his aspiration as a call for a different approach to political representation in the constituency.

According to statements attributed to him, he believes elected representatives should be accountable to the people and that political leadership should be understood primarily as service.

He has also placed particular emphasis on youth participation, arguing that young people should have a greater role in political decision-making and governance.

What Igboayaka says he wants to change

In statements surrounding his 2027 campaign, Igboayaka has criticised what he describes as longstanding problems of political representation in Orlu, Orsu and Oru East.

He has alleged that the constituency has suffered from political neglect and transactional politics, while calling for greater attention to security, economic opportunities, youth development and community advancement.

Those assertions represent the candidate’s assessment of the constituency and are part of his campaign message.

His stated political philosophy is centred on the idea that public office holders should serve the electorate.

He has repeatedly expressed the view that leadership should be measured by service to the people, rather than by the privileges attached to political office.

A candidate with a long public-service background

Igboayaka’s political profile has therefore developed across several stages — from student leadership and youth organisation to partisan politics, sociocultural advocacy and his current bid for elective office.

His campaign media team presents this background as part of the experience he would bring to the representation of Orlu, Orsu and Oru East.

As the 2027 election approaches, his candidacy places him among the politicians seeking the mandate of voters across the three local government areas.
