“House of Representatives member Amobi Godwin Ogah was remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre by an FCT High Court over alleged criminal defamation and false declaration charges. The court ordered that he remain in custody pending the next hearing date.”

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has ordered the remand of House of Representatives member, Amobi Godwin Ogah, at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, over allegations bordering on criminal defamation and false declaration.

Justice Yusuf Halilu issued the committal order after the Abia State lawmaker was arrested and brought before the court.

According to the court document dated June 24, 2026, the lawmaker will remain in custody until July 6, 2026, when the case is scheduled to resume.

The warrant of commitment, titled “Warrant of Commitment to Prison,” directed the officer in charge of Kuje Correctional Centre to receive and detain Ogah until further instructions from the court.

The document stated that the lawmaker was brought before the court over alleged offences of criminal defamation and false declaration in connection with Charge No. CR/650/2024.
It reads partly:

“The Officer in Charge of the prison at Kuje, whereas the above-named person has been arrested and brought before me, accused of the offences of criminal defamation and false declaration, you are hereby authorised and required to receive him and detain him in custody until further order; provided that, if no further order has been made as to his disposal before July 6, 2026, you shall deliver him to a police officer to bring him before me with this warrant for an order as to his disposal.”

The case dates back to July 31, 2024, when the Federal Government filed a five-count criminal charge against the Abia lawmaker.

The charges centred on allegations that Ogah made false and defamatory claims in an affidavit filed before the FCT High Court in May 2023 concerning former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha.

The prosecution alleged that the affidavit contained claims that Onyejeocha influenced tribunal proceedings and made statements capable of damaging her reputation.
