GOMEP-NG Monitors PMS Prices Across States, Demands Urgent FG Action

ABUJA — The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has raised concern over wide variations in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, across states.

The Guild made its position known during its ongoing working tour across several states as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 general elections.

Findings from the monitoring exercise showed notable differences in petrol prices in the states visited.

In Benue State, PMS was observed selling between ₦1,600 and ₦1,750 per litre.

In Kano State, several filling stations were found closed, while some outlets dispensing petrol sold the product at about ₦1,550 per litre.

Similarly, PMS was reportedly sold at about ₦1,470 per litre in Enugu State and ₦1,450 per litre in Delta State.

GOMEP-NG said the price differences are a matter of concern because petrol costs have a direct effect on transportation, food prices, business operations and the general cost of living.

The Guild therefore called on the Federal Government and relevant regulatory agencies to urgently investigate the factors behind the wide price disparities.

It also urged the authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure that consumers are not subjected to unjustified increases in petrol prices.

GOMEP-NG seeks transparency in petrol pricing

While acknowledging the Federal Government’s policy of removing the PMS subsidy and its broader objective of allowing market forces to influence petroleum prices, GOMEP-NG stressed the need for greater transparency and effective regulation.

The Guild also called for sustained monitoring of the downstream petroleum sector to promote fair competition and protect consumers.

According to GOMEP-NG, continued and unexplained increases in petrol prices could further affect public perception of the government’s economic policies, including the subsidy removal policy.

The Guild consequently urged the government, regulatory agencies and petroleum industry stakeholders to work together to ensure adequate product supply and greater transparency in petroleum pricing.

It said a competitive downstream petroleum market should also be maintained to protect consumers and reduce unnecessary pressure on households and businesses.

GOMEP-NG further stated that it would continue to monitor developments in the petroleum sector across the country.

The Guild said its monitoring efforts would focus on promoting consumer protection, economic stability and transparency in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry.
