According to Daily Trust, the tragic incident occurred after the man was seen earlier in the day pushing his wheelbarrow along the roadside before deciding to take a break.

Eyewitnesses said the labourer appeared exhausted. He reportedly parked his wheelbarrow at a relatively quiet spot and lay down to rest before falling unconscious.

However, hours later, passersby noticed that he had remained in the same position without any movement. Concerned by the unusual situation, some residents approached him to wake him but discovered that he was unresponsive.

The incident quickly drew a crowd as shocked residents and traders gathered at the scene. While some alerted the authorities, others expressed sadness over the tragic development.
Security personnel later arrived and secured the area to prevent interference with the scene.

Preliminary observations reportedly showed no visible signs of violence or physical injury on the deceased. Nevertheless, the exact cause of death had yet to be established at the time of filing this report.

The body was subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and further examination. Authorities are expected to carry out investigations to determine the cause of death, establish the man’s identity, and trace his relatives.

Residents described the deceased as a familiar face who was often seen pushing heavy loads along the Aba–Owerri Road. However, many admitted they did not know his name or where he lived.

Some residents also appealed to the government and relevant agencies to strengthen social welfare initiatives and improve access to emergency medical care. According to them, prompt medical intervention can sometimes prevent avoidable deaths when people collapse in public places.

Police authorities have urged anyone with useful information that could help identify the deceased to come forward. They also appealed to families searching for missing relatives to contact the appropriate authorities for possible identification.
