“Is Ohuhu Truly in Governor Alex Otti’s Good Books?” — Youth Leader Questions Alleged Neglect of Ohuhu Community
Ohuhu Youth President questions alleged neglect under Governor Alex Otti, calling for road repairs, Smart Schools, and inclusive development.
The big question on the lips of many is this: Is Ohuhu truly in the good books of the present Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti?
As Governor Otti’s administration continues its ambitious drive to reposition Abia State, concerns have been mounting among indigenes of Ohuhu over what they describe as systematic neglect and marginalization of their community.
Speaking on behalf of the Ohuhu people, Chief Iheanacho Uchenna Gavin, the Youth President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union, expressed deep concern that despite the clan’s rich cultural heritage and immense contributions to Abia’s political and economic growth, Ohuhu appears to have been left behind in the state’s development agenda.
Neglect of Road Infrastructure
One of the most pressing issues raised by the community is the deplorable condition of roads in Ohuhu. According to Chief Gavin, the once-proud legacy of the late Dr. Michael Okpara, the revered former Premier of Eastern Nigeria—whose hometown is in Ohuhu—has been sadly forgotten by the current administration.
Community elders lament that the Otti-led government has not prioritized the rehabilitation of Ohuhu’s major road networks. They recalled that even past administrations made modest efforts by building culverts, rehabilitating local markets, and reconstructing roads, which boosted local trade and social interaction.
Exclusion from Smart School Project
Education, too, has become a sore point. Reports from journalists and stakeholders reveal that Ohuhu was completely excluded from the state’s Smart School Project—a flagship program designed to modernize public education through digital innovation and infrastructure.
While many parts of Abia have benefitted from the initiative, no Smart School has been sited in Ohuhu, leaving the community’s children and youth at a disadvantage in an era where digital literacy is crucial to success.
Abandoned Agricultural Potentials
The people of Ohuhu also decry the neglect of the two farm settlements within their community, once vibrant centers of agricultural excellence and economic activity.
According to local farmers and elders, these farms—previously vital to Abia’s food production and rural empowerment—have now fallen into a state of disrepair and abandonment.
Stakeholders warn that neglecting these agricultural assets not only undermines food security but also limits the economic opportunities available to rural communities in the state.
Widespread Infrastructure Decay
Beyond roads and schools, Ohuhu residents highlight a broader pattern of infrastructural decline. They lament the absence of reliable electricity, clean water, and healthcare facilities, all of which have worsened living conditions in the area.
Many households, they say, now rely on costly private alternatives to meet basic needs, further widening the economic gap between urban and rural areas.
A Plea to Governor Otti
In a heartfelt appeal, the Ohuhu community calls on Governor Alex Otti to demonstrate his commitment to inclusive governance by giving their area the attention it deserves.
Their key demands include:
Rehabilitation of road networks to boost transportation and local commerce.
Establishment of Smart Schools to promote quality education and digital literacy.
Revitalization of Ohuhu farm settlements to enhance food production and youth employment.
Provision of basic amenities such as electricity, water, and healthcare to improve living standards.
Chief Gavin stressed that addressing these issues will not only rebuild trust between the government and the Ohuhu people but also prove that Governor Otti’s “New Abia” vision truly includes every community—no matter how small or politically neutral.
With the right attention and investment, Ohuhu can once again stand as a thriving hub of agriculture, culture, and commerce, contributing meaningfully to the state’s development goals.
“Governor Otti’s administration has a golden opportunity to show that good governance knows no boundaries,” Chief Gavin concluded.
