Babachir Lawal Predicts Atiku’s Defeat, Gives Peter Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket 70% Chance in 2027

A fresh political prediction by former SGF Babachir Lawal has ignited debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as he openly declares that Atiku Abubakar will lose while giving a Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso alliance the strongest chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu.

With political realignments gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has made a bold prediction about the race for Nigeria’s highest office. Lawal declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would “definitely lose” the election, while expressing confidence that a Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket would stand the best chance of victory.

Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Lawal said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has no realistic path to victory in the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, a political alliance involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would have a 70 per cent chance of winning, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently stands at 50 per cent on his personal assessment scale.
“Atiku Abubakar will definitely lose the 2027 election. I pray he loses. I’m not the only one who wants this, but he will surely lose.”
Lawal added:

“Peter Obi and Rabi’u Kwankwaso, I’m pairing them, have a 70 per cent chance on my own scale. Peter Obi always tries to do what is right. President Bola Tinubu has 50 per cent.”
His comments come amid growing discussions over possible opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.

Lawal Speaks on PFIPC Controversy

Meanwhile, the former SGF also reacted to documents linking the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Reports had indicated that the SGF’s office approved a request by the self-styled Director-General of the PFIPC, Adeniyi Adeyemi, to participate in the Canada-Africa Fintech Summit scheduled for August 2025.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Lawal argued that such correspondence should never have been processed if the agency lacked legal recognition.

According to him, the Office of the SGF has a duty to verify the legal status of every federal agency before processing or forwarding official requests.

“It should not have arisen in the first place if it is not a legally approved agency. It should not exist. And the SGF would know that. If it doesn’t exist on any basis, why is he forwarding a request? If it doesn’t exist, such would not happen in our time.”

Lawal further maintained that although presidential spokespersons may issue official statements on behalf of the administration, any communication originating from a federal agency should first undergo proper due diligence before being transmitted through the Office of the SGF.

His remarks add a fresh dimension to the ongoing controversy surrounding the legal status and activities of the PFIPC.
