A 34-year-old English and Religious Education teacher at Shitima Secondary School in Kabwe, Zambia, has reportedly died by suicide after allegedly being threatened with public exposure over an unpaid debt. Police confirmed she was found unconscious by her mother and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident has reignited concerns about debt-related stigma and mental health awareness.
A tragic incident has left Zambia’s education sector in mourning after a 34-year-old teacher reportedly died by suicide following an alleged threat to publicly expose her over an unpaid debt.
The deceased, identified as Konkola, was an English and Religious Education teacher at Shitima Secondary School in Kabwe, located in Zambia’s Central Province.
According to reports, Konkola had allegedly become overwhelmed by the fear of being publicly labelled a scammer after one of her creditors reportedly confronted her and threatened to expose her over money she owed.
Before the incident, she reportedly invited her mother to travel from Mkushi to Kabwe.
However, when her mother arrived, she found her daughter unconscious inside her residence.
Police in Zambia’s Central Province confirmed that the teacher was discovered unconscious at about 5:00 p.m. Her mother immediately rushed her to the hospital, where medical personnel later pronounced her dead on arrival.
The management of Shitima Secondary School also confirmed her death, describing her as a “jovial and hardworking teacher” whose passing has left colleagues, learners and the wider school community devastated.
According to The Eagle, Shitima Secondary School is a grant-aided Catholic mission school guided by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The institution describes itself as more than just a place of learning, stating that it is a community where “every learner matters, every talent shines and every dream is possible.”
Although investigations are ongoing, the tragedy has sparked widespread discussions on the emotional impact of financial hardship, debt-related stigma and the importance of compassion when dealing with people facing personal challenges.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
