Following the crash, police went to the family home. There, officers discovered Rachel’s body lying in her bed.

According to District Attorney Patrick Warren, Wagner later wrote a handwritten confession detailing the killing.

In the confession, the teenager reportedly admitted that she had first planned to carry out a shooting at her former middle school.

However, she later abandoned the school attack and decided to kill her mother instead.

Investigators said the planned school shooting had been “inspired” by six mass shooters. However, authorities did not publicly disclose the identities of those individuals.

Further investigation also uncovered Wagner’s online activity.

Authorities said the teenager had built an online presence focused on planning a mass-casualty attack. She had also communicated with anonymous people online who allegedly encouraged her to commit murder.

The gun used to kill her mother was reportedly purchased from a pawn shop about a month before the fatal shooting.

Wagner eventually pleaded guilty to the killing and was sentenced to life in prison.

However, the sentence does not mean she will necessarily spend the rest of her life behind bars. She will become eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

The case has drawn attention to the disturbing combination of youth violence, online influences and plans for mass-casualty attacks.
