Anambra Police arrest a 26-year-old man over the alleged murder of his girlfriend in Ekwulobia, debunking social media claims surrounding the case.”

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Valentine Anikpe, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Sunday.

According to Ikenga, the suspect was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, on January 7, 2026, following investigations into the incident.

He debunked reports circulating on social media suggesting that the victim was killed by individuals to whom the suspect was indebted, describing such claims as “false, misleading and unfounded.”

“Members of the public are urged to disregard these unverified reports,” Ikenga said.
The police spokesman revealed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, an act that reportedly led to her death.

Ikenga stated that the incident occurred at about 12:00 midnight on December 9, 2025, adding that the suspect claimed the act was carried out due to suspicions of infidelity.

“The suspect, in his confession, stated that the act was committed as a result of suspected infidelity,” Ikenga said.

“He further disclosed that he became emotionally distressed after going bankrupt and accumulating debts while attempting to establish a business for the victim, a situation that allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation.”

The police spokesman also revealed that the suspect admitted to dropping a fake letter claiming that he had been kidnapped by individuals he owed money, in a bid to mislead investigators and evade arrest.

Ikenga noted that detectives, in the course of ongoing investigations, have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited.

He added that the incident has generated public outrage and reignited conversations around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes within the community.

The police spokesman urged members of the public to adopt lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.

He further disclosed that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
