NDC Condemns Alleged Political Violence in Effurun, Urges Police, DSS Probe

Tension has risen in Effurun, Delta State, after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alleged that a political rally in the area was disrupted by intimidation, violence and thuggery, prompting the party to demand an urgent investigation by security agencies.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and Inspector-General of Police to investigate an alleged attack and disruption of a political rally in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The party said those found responsible should be prosecuted.

EFFURUN, Delta State — Tension has risen in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, following allegations of intimidation, violence and political thuggery during a recent rally.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Delta State Governorship Campaign Organisation condemned the alleged disruption and called for an urgent investigation by security agencies.

The campaign organisation made the demand through its Director-General, Mulade Alfred, who urged the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate the incident.

It also called for the identification and prosecution of anyone found responsible.

According to Mulade, the reported disruption of what was described as a peaceful political gathering was unacceptable.

He warned that political activities ahead of the 2027 Delta State governorship election should not be defined by intimidation, violence or the activities of suspected political thugs.

“We will not be intimidated. Political differences must be settled through democratic processes and not through violence, threats or the activities of political thugs.”

NDC demands urgent security investigation
The NDC campaign organisation said it would not be deterred by what it described as attempts to intimidate its members and supporters.

Instead, it said the party would continue to engage voters across Delta State through peaceful political activities.

Mulade maintained that political contests should focus on ideas, programmes and the ability of candidates to address the needs of residents.

He further called on the DSS and the police authorities to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action where wrongdoing is established.

“We call on the DSS and the Inspector-General of Police to act immediately, investigate the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.”

The campaign organisation also urged political stakeholders to avoid actions capable of escalating tension as the 2027 governorship contest gradually gathers momentum.

NDC outlines 2027 campaign agenda
Beyond the reported incident, the NDC campaign said its proposed political agenda would focus on issues affecting residents across Delta State.

These include economic opportunities, security, accountability, infrastructure and effective public service delivery.

The campaign is backing its consensus governorship candidate, Dcn. Chris Iyovwaye.
According to the organisation, Iyovwaye’s political platform is centred on accountability, economic development, security and improved public service.

Its proposed development programme, known as “Delta Vision 2035,” contains an 11-point agenda which the campaign says is designed to provide an alternative approach to governance in the state.

The campaign organisation also said its grassroots structure, known as the “OK Rapid Squad,” is mobilising supporters across the state’s 25 local government areas.

According to the campaign, the structure is intended to promote peaceful political participation and encourage vigilance in protecting votes during elections.

Mulade further appealed to political actors in Delta State to respect democratic processes and allow parties and candidates to campaign freely.

He said the people of Delta deserved a peaceful and issue-based political environment.
“We will not be intimidated. We will not be silent. Delta must be free.

“We urge all political actors to respect the democratic process and allow every party and candidate to campaign freely. Those behind any act of violence should be fished out and made to face the law.”

The NDC campaign organisation said it would continue to engage Deltans and present its programmes to the electorate despite what it described as attempts to frustrate its activities.

It also called on security agencies to remain neutral and ensure that political activities across Delta State are conducted peacefully as preparations for the 2027 governorship election intensify.

With the 2027 Delta governorship race already beginning to take shape, the NDC says political disagreements must not descend into violence, intimidation or street-level confrontation. The party is now seeking a security probe into the alleged Effurun incident and urging authorities to protect peaceful political participation.
