Midnight Arson: Gunmen Set Catholic Church, Priest’s SUV Ablaze in Cross River

“Tension is mounting in Cross River State after suspected arsonists launched a pre-dawn attack on a Catholic church, razing sensitive church records and burning vehicles within the premises — the latest in a troubling wave of attacks targeting religious institutions across Nigeria.”

By Charity Uwakwe

The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has confirmed an early morning attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed that the incident occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday when suspected arsonists stormed the church premises and set parts of the property ablaze.

According to him, the fire completely destroyed vital church records kept inside the sacristy. The attackers also torched a Lexus RX 350 SUV reportedly belonging to the resident priest, alongside a Toyota Corolla parked within the compound.

“No suspect has been identified at this time. Efforts are ongoing to ascertain those responsible for this unfortunate criminal act,” Eitokpah said.

He added, “Should any suspect be identified, this will be made known to the public. So far, the scene has been visited, photographs taken, and the case recorded and referred to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.”
Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack.

WIDER SECURITY CONCERNS

The incident comes against the backdrop of rising insecurity affecting religious communities in parts of Nigeria. In recent months, there have been renewed concerns over attacks on places of worship, particularly in the northern region of the country.

The situation has drawn international attention, with countries such as the United States calling for improved security measures and stronger protection for vulnerable communities.

Security analysts warn that continued attacks on religious institutions could further heighten tensions and undermine public confidence in safety measures.

Investigations into the Cross River church attack are ongoing.
