Shock and grief have gripped residents of Ezema Nru community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State following the alleged killing of a 70-year-old woman, popularly known as “Mama Oliver,” by her daughter and granddaughter in a disturbing family tragedy that unfolded on Tuesday.

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased had relocated from Umabor-Ehalumona to live with her daughter, Loretta Asadu, in order to care for her and her granddaughter, both reportedly battling mental health challenges.

“I know them very well,” an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said. “The daughter’s name is Loretta Asadu, and the granddaughter’s name is Chikamso. Mama Oliver came from Umabor-Ehalumona to assist her mentally challenged daughter. She is about 70 years old and was still very energetic.”

The source further disclosed that Loretta Asadu is the widow of the late Ignatius Asadu of Umunkporogidi, and that her mental health condition allegedly worsened in recent times.
Tragedy reportedly struck after the elderly woman complained of hunger. A male family member identified as Abumchukwu, said to be Loretta’s son, had stepped out to buy food for his grandmother.

“Before leaving, Abumchukwu had tied his mother’s hands because she was becoming violent,” a neighbour recounted. “While he was away, Chikamso untied her mother. Both of them allegedly attacked the old woman, dragged her behind the house, and killed her.

They accused her of stealing their money.”
Another resident, Ifeanyi, confirmed the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the development.

“It is true. I have been crying,” she said. “The son called us saying something terrible had happened. Loretta has been having mental health issues. The deceased was a very peaceful woman.”

The body of the deceased has since been deposited in a mortuary, while the Enugu State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The tragic development has sparked renewed conversations around mental health awareness and community intervention in rural areas.
