50,000 Relief Scam: GOMEP-NG President Warns Nigerians Against Fake Registration Links
Nigerians hoping to benefit from the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 relief intervention are being warned to watch out for fake registration links and fraudsters seeking to steal their money or personal information.
ABUJA — Nigerians have been warned to be cautious of fraudsters exploiting public interest in the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 relief intervention to defraud unsuspecting citizens.
The warning was issued by the National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, who urged members of the public to ignore online links, social media posts and individuals claiming to offer registration for the intervention.
Otiti said such claims were false and could expose unsuspecting Nigerians to financial losses and the theft of personal information.
According to him, there is currently no official public application or registration process for the ₦50,000 relief programme, despite claims circulating on social media and other online platforms.
He advised Nigerians against clicking on websites or portals that claim to facilitate registration, warning that some of the platforms could be designed to collect sensitive information or demand payments from desperate applicants.
The GOMEP-NG President also cautioned against individuals who claim to have access to government officials or the ability to secure beneficiary slots in exchange for money or personal details.
He explained that beneficiaries are identified by the Federal Government to support poor and vulnerable households and that the process is not based on open public registration.
“From available information, beneficiaries are identified by the government, and those selected are notified directly. No individual or organisation has been authorised to register applicants or guarantee inclusion,” Otiti stated.
He further disclosed that successful beneficiaries would receive official SMS notifications through approved payment service providers.
Otiti urged Nigerians to rely on verified government announcements for information about the intervention and to treat unsolicited messages, registration forms and payment requests with caution.
He also encouraged citizens who encounter suspicious messages or suspected scams to report them to the appropriate authorities.
The GOMEP-NG President reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting credible information and tackling misinformation, particularly on issues that affect the welfare and financial security of Nigerians.
