“The race for the 2027 Abia State House of Assembly elections is gaining momentum as Engr. Chidi Igwe Uka, an aspirant for Ohafia South State Constituency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised what he described as years of neglect and ineffective representation in the area. Speaking shortly after the party’s screening exercise in Umuahia on Sunday, Ukah insisted that leadership should be measured by visible impact and not mere political popularity.”
UMUAHIA — An aspirant for Ohafia South State Constituency under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Engr. Chidi Igwe Ukah, has declared that the people of the constituency are ready for a new era of leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ukah made the declaration on Sunday while speaking with Famous Reporters.com shortly after the screening exercise for aspirants held at the party’s state secretariat in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
The NDC chieftain described the party as “a strong political force” capable of upsetting established structures in the forthcoming elections, stressing that winning elections requires more than merely securing party tickets.
“It is one thing to secure a party ticket, but it is another thing entirely to win an election,” he stated.
Speaking on the state of Ohafia South constituency, Ukah questioned the performance of the incumbent lawmaker, insisting that public office holders must be assessed based on measurable achievements and visible impact on the people.
“The people must be able to assess visible impact. If someone cannot point to tangible achievements after four years in office, why should such a person be re-elected?” he asked.
According to him, the widespread decay in infrastructure and alleged neglect across the constituency motivated his decision to join the race.
“I have gone around and witnessed the decay in infrastructure and the level of neglect in the area. I want to offer something different — not just campaign promises, but leadership whose impact the people can genuinely feel and measure,” Uka added.
The aspirant also spoke extensively about his political background and relationship with the popular political movement known as “B2B.”
He disclosed that he previously served as Abia coordinator of the People’s Influence group and was also a member of the Peter Obi Vanguard support structure at the grassroots level.
While reaffirming his loyalty to the Peter Obi movement, Ukah maintained that his political ambition goes beyond riding on the popularity of any individual politician.
“I have a vision and a long-term political plan. I want to build a political structure that can stand on its own — a structure capable of winning elections even when Peter Obi is no longer on the ballot,” he said.
He further described the NDC as “a strong force to contend with” in the forthcoming elections, stressing that candidates must possess both credibility and measurable impact
Ukah, however, expressed confidence that the people of Ohafia South would embrace what he described as a fresh and people-oriented leadership style if elected into office.
Warning to Aspirants who rely on Peter Obi’s waves
Fielding questions from journalists, he criticised politicians who rely entirely on political waves without building grassroots support, warning that such strategies may not guarantee long-term political relevance.

He, therefore, advised politicians preparing for the 2027 general elections to stop depending solely on the popularity of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The NDC chieftain maintained that although Peter Obi remains a strong political force, aspirants must build independent political structures capable of surviving beyond any individual’s influence.
According to him, many politicians seeking House of Representatives and senatorial tickets were merely hoping to ride on Obi’s popularity instead of investing in grassroots mobilization and long-term political development.
“It is one thing to secure a party ticket, but it is another thing entirely to win an election,” Ukah said.
“Many people are rushing for tickets because they believe Peter Obi’s popularity alone can carry them to victory. But many are unwilling to do the hard work necessary to build genuine grassroots support,” he stated.
“Peter Obi has promised to do only one four-year term. So they should ask themselves: what happens when Peter Obi is no longer on the ballot?” He queried, as he advised them to rethink their strategy.
