BLACK SUNDAY: FRSC Explains How Overspeeding Claimed 15 Lives In Lagos
A total of 15 persons comprising nine male adults, five female adults and one female child were on Sunday morning killed when an accident involving two vehicles; a truck with registration number AKM 926 YQ, and a Mazda L2000 Bus marked MUS 411 XU occurred along Badagry – Ijanikin road at about 0731 hrs.
A statement signed by the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command, Superintendent Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi, and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), confirmed that 24 persons were involved in the early morning accident.
The statement added that of the nine persons (five male and four female), who sustained varying degree of injuries, one whom reportedly gave up the ghost at the hospital just as fourteen were brought in dead.
While the injured are currently receiving treatment at the Badagry General Hospital, bodies of the dead have since been deposited at the Morgue of the same hospital.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Babatunde Farinloye, who has commiserated with the families of those that lost their lives while wishing the injured quick recovery, also directed families of the victims to visit the hospital and the Badagry Unit Command of the Corps for further and necessary action information.
He reiterated the need for caution on the parts of drivers and all motorists, saying that the accident was avoidable if common sense and defensive driving techniques had been deployed on the parts of the drivers.
The crash, the statement further noted, occured as a result of overspeeding and overtaking during the heavy downpour by the drivers, who were traveling on opposite directions, resulting in loss of control and headon collision.
The FRSC boss warned motorists to desist from over speeding, obey road traffic regulations at all times, and be more cautious as the road is under reconstruction.
“The rainy season is here, and it is pertinent to allow common and sense speed limit to prevail,” he said.
He therefore warned that the Command will continue to bring to book all perpetrators of road traffic infractions.
Farinloye also advised passengers of all vehicles not to leave their safety in the hands of the drivers but rather see themselves as stakeholders such that they also help caution drivers any time violations are observed while on a trip.
