Woman Loses Hands and Feet After Illegal Silicone Butt Injections Nearly Kill Her
A cosmetic procedure meant to give Apryl Brown a fuller figure nearly cost her everything. Years later, she is using her painful experience to warn others about the dangers of illegal body-enhancement injections.
Apryl Michelle Brown wanted a fuller figure. Instead, a decision she made in pursuit of a cosmetic change nearly cost her her life and left her permanently disabled.
Brown, a hairdresser, beautician and mother from Los Angeles, underwent what she believed was an inexpensive cosmetic procedure in 2004 after becoming dissatisfied with her appearance.
Unable to afford a medical procedure, she was introduced to a woman offering low-cost body-contouring injections outside a proper medical setting.
Brown later discovered that the substance injected into her body was industrial-grade silicone rather than an approved cosmetic filler.
The injections were reportedly administered by an unqualified individual in an improvised setting, exposing Brown to serious health risks.
Over time, the treated area became hard, discoloured and increasingly painful. The silicone eventually migrated through her tissues, causing extensive damage and tissue death.
Her condition deteriorated further when a severe infection developed and spread through her body, putting her life at risk.
Doctors eventually had to carry out a series of surgeries to save her life. Brown ultimately lost both hands and both feet following the devastating complications and prolonged battle with sepsis.
But the tragedy did not end her story.
Rather than keeping her experience private, Brown chose to speak publicly about what happened to her. She has shared her journey through media appearances and her writing, using her experience to warn others about the dangers of unapproved cosmetic injections.
Her story also chronicles the difficult process of adapting to life with prosthetic limbs, rebuilding her independence and confronting the emotional consequences of what happened.
For Brown, one of the most difficult parts of her journey has been learning to forgive herself for a decision that changed her life forever.
Her experience highlights the potentially devastating consequences of seeking cosmetic procedures outside regulated medical care.
Unapproved substances, including industrial silicone and other materials not intended for injection into the human body, can cause severe inflammation, tissue damage, infection and other potentially irreversible complications. Once such substances migrate into surrounding tissues, removing them can also be extremely difficult.
Brown’s experience has therefore become a powerful warning about the risks associated with unregulated cosmetic procedures and the pressure many people face to change their bodies in pursuit of beauty standards.
Today, she continues to share her story in the hope that others will think twice before turning to unlicensed practitioners or unapproved substances for cheaper cosmetic alternatives.
What began as a desire to change her appearance ultimately transformed Brown’s life. But by speaking openly about her ordeal, she has turned a deeply painful experience into a message of awareness, prevention and patient safety.
