Muoboghare Defends Tinubu’s Record Amid Background Controversies

Can a controversial past erase a leader’s achievements? Prof. Patrick Muoboghare says no. He has urged Nigerians to look beyond the controversies surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s background and judge him instead by his political record, governance and economic decisions.

Prof. Patrick Muoboghare has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against criticism of his educational and family background, saying such controversies should not overshadow Tinubu’s political record, economic reforms and achievements in public service.

ABUJA — Professor Patrick Muoboghare has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against criticisms surrounding his educational and family background, arguing that controversies about his early life should not overshadow his achievements in politics and public service.

Muoboghare said that even if some of the claims made about Tinubu’s childhood, schooling, name, parentage and place of origin were accepted, they would not erase what he described as the President’s political and governance achievements.

Muoboghare: Tinubu’s Background Should Not Define His Legacy

Muoboghare was reacting to claims that Tinubu did not attend primary or secondary school and to questions raised over his origins and family background.

He also referred to accounts portraying Tinubu as an orphan who experienced severe hardship, could not afford formal education and later moved to Lagos, where he was reportedly taken in by another family.

“I agree with you,” Muoboghare said, stressing that even a difficult childhood should not become a basis for dismissing a person’s later accomplishments.

According to him, Tinubu’s reported journey from hardship to becoming an accountant, politician, senator, governor and eventually President of Nigeria represents an extraordinary rise.

He argued that the President’s political record, particularly his years as governor of Lagos State, should be assessed on its own merits rather than through controversies surrounding his early life.

Muoboghare described Tinubu as one of the most courageous political figures Nigeria has produced.

‘Tinubu’s Rise Is Like David’s Story’

The professor further compared Tinubu’s political journey to biblical accounts of people who emerged from seemingly unlikely circumstances to take on major responsibilities.

Referring to the biblical story of David, Muoboghare argued that people can rise from humble or difficult backgrounds and still achieve extraordinary things.

He therefore cautioned critics against judging Tinubu solely by allegations about his childhood, education or origins.

According to him, a person who emerges from adversity can sometimes accomplish what others consider impossible.

Muoboghare Ranks Tinubu Among Nigeria’s Influential Political Leaders

On Tinubu’s political influence, Muoboghare placed him among Nigeria’s most powerful party leaders, alongside prominent political figures such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu Bello.

He credited Tinubu with building a strong political structure in Lagos and maintaining significant influence beyond his tenure as governor.

Muoboghare said the President’s political strength is also reflected in his ability to build a loyal political team and remain a major force within Nigeria’s ruling political structure.

He Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Muoboghare also defended some of the major economic policies introduced by the Tinubu administration.

He particularly cited the removal of the fuel subsidy and changes to the foreign-exchange system.

According to him, the decisions required political courage and were aimed at addressing longstanding economic problems.

He further argued that the reforms have increased revenue available to state and local governments, helping some states manage debts and meet their financial obligations.

Muslim-Muslim Ticket Should Not Define Tinubu’s Presidency

Muoboghare also rejected the argument that Tinubu’s administration should be judged primarily through the religious identity of the President and Vice President.

He urged Nigerians to focus more on governance, development and security than on whether a Christian or Muslim occupies a particular position.

At the same time, he called for stronger action against insecurity.

He expressed support for state police, arguing that locally based security structures could be more responsive and accountable to the communities they serve.

Muoboghare: I Will Continue to Support Tinubu

Muoboghare concluded that controversies surrounding Tinubu’s background should not determine how Nigerians assess his presidency.

He said he remained convinced that the President deserved support and that criticism over his childhood, education or origins would not change his decision to vote for and campaign for Tinubu.

For Muoboghare, Tinubu’s rise to Nigeria’s highest political office is ultimately a story of resilience, political determination and what he described as divine intervention.
