Union Bank Secures PCI DSS 4.0.1 Certification, Strengthens Card Data Security

As digital payments grow and cyber threats become more sophisticated, Union Bank of Nigeria is tightening its defences around one of the most sensitive assets in modern banking — customers’ payment card data.

Union Bank of Nigeria has secured PCI DSS 4.0.1 certification, effective August 11, 2026, confirming that its payment card data security systems and processes meet internationally recognised requirements for protecting customers’ card information.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Union Bank of Nigeria has strengthened its payment security framework after securing certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, a globally recognised standard for protecting payment card data.

The certification, which took effect on August 11, 2026, confirms that the bank’s systems and processes for handling payment card information have met stringent security requirements.

The development is expected to further strengthen the protection of customers’ credit and debit card information against data breaches, fraud and other payment-related security threats.

Union Bank passes broad security assessment

PCI DSS provides a set of technical and operational requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card account data.

For Union Bank, the assessment covered key areas of its payment and banking operations. These included network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and POS transaction acquiring, payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback, dispute resolution and retail banking.

The bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category.

The certification process followed a year-long engagement involving quarterly assessments. Departmental, business and functional heads across the bank also contributed to the process, with support from cybersecurity firm Digital Encode.

The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.

Yetunde Oni speaks on customer data protection

Commenting on the certification, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said customer information security remained central to the bank’s operations.

«“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank. This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe.”»

According to the bank, the certification also ensures that its PCI DSS compliance remains continuous.

This is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for banks to maintain continuous compliance without a gap.

The latest certification therefore marks another step in Union Bank’s efforts to protect payment card data and maintain customer confidence as digital banking and electronic payments continue to expand.
