The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone C (South East), has extended warm felicitations to workers across the region as they commemorate Workers’ Day 2026. The Union applauded the show of resilience and contributions to national development, as displayed by workers.
In a goodwill message released on May 1, by the Vice President of NUJ Zone C, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, JP, the Union described the annual celebration as “a moment to honour the dedication, sacrifices, and enduring spirit of Nigerian workers who continue to sustain the nation’s socio-economic framework despite prevailing challenges.”
Adiuku paid special tribute to journalists and media professionals, noting that their “unwavering commitment to truth, accountability, and public enlightenment remains the backbone of Nigeria’s democracy.”
“Despite economic pressures, safety risks, and the evolving dynamics of the media landscape, journalists have remained steadfast in upholding the ethics of the profession,” he said.
“Their sacrifices—often unseen and underappreciated—are critical to nation-building, good governance, and the preservation of democratic values.”
Furthermore, the NUJ leader urged media practitioners to remain resolute in professionalism, integrity, and courage. He emphasized the need for journalists to continue amplifying citizens’ voices and holding leaders accountable.
“As we mark this year’s Workers’ Day, let us remain committed to ethical journalism and national unity. The media must continue to play its pivotal role in shaping a just and informed society,” he added.
Also, Adiuku called on governments and employers to prioritise workers’ welfare, stressing that journalists in particular require improved safety measures and professional support.
“The role of journalists in shaping public discourse cannot be overstated. Their protection, welfare, and continuous development must be treated as a priority,” he said.
Meanwhile, he concluded with a call for collective action toward building a more inclusive and prosperous society.
“Together, we can build a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous nation,” the statement added.
