The Tragic Tale of Demeriah: A Call for Controlled Smartphones Use Among Teenagers

By Elizabeth Austin, Lagos.

In a heart-wrenching incident, 8-year-old Demeria Hollingsworth lost her life at the hands of her 12-year-old cousin, over an iPhone.

Famous Reporters reports that the devastating incident occurred two weeks ago in Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America (USA).

According to Inside Edition, the incident happened while in the aftermath of a dispute between Demeria and her 12-year-old cousin, at their grandparents’ house.

One could be tempted to ask what was the motive behind this senseless killing? Funny enough, the answer is simple; a dispute over a smartphone between the deceased and her cousin.

Demeriah’s story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of uncontrolled smartphone use among teenagers. The constant exposure to screens, social media, and the pressure to stay connected can lead to a toxic mix of obsession, aggression, and impulsivity.

As Demeriah’s family grapples with the devastating loss, experts warn that this tragedy is not an isolated incident. The unchecked use of smartphones among teenagers can have far-reaching consequences, including:

  • Increased aggression and violence
  • Decreased attention span and academic performance
  • Amplified cyberbullying and online harassment
  • Distorted self-image and low self-esteem
  • Sleep deprivation and mental health issues

It’s time for parents, educators, and policymakers to take action. By implementing measures to control smartphone use among teenagers, we can prevent similar tragedies and ensure a safer, healthier environment for our youth.

Solutions:

  • Set screen time limits and enforce phone-free zones
  • Monitor online activity and block harmful content
  • Encourage physical activity, socialization, and hobbies
  • Educate teenagers about responsible phone use and digital citizenship
  • Develop and support phone-free initiatives in schools and communities

A child should be allowed to used smart phones by the age of 16 to avoid addiction of the phone at a very young age

Demeriah’s story is a painful reminder of the consequences of uncontrolled smartphone use. Let’s come together to create a safer, more responsible digital landscape for our children.
