The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, identified as Mfon Jeremiah, for allegedly impregnating his 13-year-old daughter in the Mowe area of the state.
The suspect was reportedly arrested after the victim’s mother lodged a complaint at the Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters upon discovering that her teenage daughter was pregnant and that her husband was allegedly responsible.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the woman had taken the minor to a hospital where medical examinations confirmed that she was four months pregnant. Subsequently, when questioned about the pregnancy, the teenager allegedly identified her father as the person responsible.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Folake Afeniforo, reportedly mobilised officers to the suspect’s residence, where he was apprehended and taken into police custody for interrogation.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to having sexual intercourse with his daughter, which resulted in the pregnancy. However, he reportedly claimed that he was “under a spell” at the time of the incident.
According to police sources, the suspect stated that he believed he was “dreaming” of having sexual relations with his estranged wife because they had separated, only to later realise that it was his daughter.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident has since generated outrage among residents and child rights advocates, with renewed calls for stricter protection of minors against sexual abuse and domestic violence.
