Niger Man Sentenced to 13 Years, 20 Strokes for Raping Neighbour’s 10-Year-Old Daughter

A 10-year-old girl has been given a measure of justice after a man who raped her was sentenced to 13 years in prison and 20 strokes of the cane in Niger State.

Following the judgment, the convict was taken to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the 20 strokes of the cane were publicly administered in the presence of community members.

The Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Barrister Ummul-kalthume Muhammad, described the public enforcement of the punishment as an unprecedented step.

She said it was meant to demonstrate that the government would not treat sexual offences against children lightly.

According to Muhammad, the action was also intended to send a strong warning to anyone who believes that child abuse can be committed without consequences.

She urged communities to stop shielding or protecting people accused of abusing children.

A representative of the Niger State Ministry of Justice, identified as Shafa, described the judgment as an important development that could serve as a precedent in similar cases.

She also urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse instead of allowing offenders to evade justice.

According to her, the victim’s mother had initially considered withdrawing the case.

However, she later decided to allow the legal process to continue after she understood the importance of seeking justice for the child and ensuring that the accused was held accountable.

The Hakimi of Bosso, Malam Muazu Adamu Laka, said he had never witnessed such a judgment being publicly enforced in his community.

He expressed satisfaction with the decision, saying the public enforcement would help residents understand the seriousness of child sexual abuse.

He added that the punishment could also discourage others from committing similar offences.

The case has renewed calls for parents, traditional rulers and community members to take stronger action against child sexual abuse.

The Niger State Child Rights Agency said the punishment was not only about the offender but was also intended to send a wider message that people who abuse children should expect serious consequences under the law.

The agency urged residents to report suspected cases of child abuse to the Niger State Child Rights Agency or the nearest police division.

“Always report abuse against children in your community to Niger State Child Rights Agency or any police division in your community,” the agency said.
