Nenadi Usman emerges Labour Party’s interim national chairman

Senator Nenadi Usman has been elected as the interim national chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

Usman was elected following a meeting of the party’s national executive committee (NEC) held in Abuja today, Friday, July 18.

A former Senator representing Abia central, Darlington Nwokocha was also elected as the interim national secretary.

The appointments are part of efforts by the faction to reconstitute the party’s leadership ahead of a national convention.

The newly constituted interim national working committee is expected to oversee the affairs of the party until a new NEC is elected at the convention.

During Friday’s meeting, the NEC also approved a timetable for the conduct of congresses across all levels of the party structure. This includes ward, local government, state, zonal congresses, and the national convention.

According to a resolution passed at the meeting, the party’s national secretariat has been mandated to publish detailed guidelines and timelines for the congresses and convention, in a bid to promote internal democracy and transparency in the electoral process.

The development is the latest in a series of internal disputes that have fractured the Labour Party since the 2023 general election, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s leadership.
