According to him, the fire completely destroyed vital church records kept inside the sacristy. The attackers also torched a Lexus RX 350 SUV reportedly belonging to the resident priest, alongside a Toyota Corolla parked within the compound.

“No suspect has been identified at this time. Efforts are ongoing to ascertain those responsible for this unfortunate criminal act,” Eitokpah said.

He added, “Should any suspect be identified, this will be made known to the public. So far, the scene has been visited, photographs taken, and the case recorded and referred to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.”
Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the attack.

WIDER SECURITY CONCERNS

The incident comes against the backdrop of rising insecurity affecting religious communities in parts of Nigeria. In recent months, there have been renewed concerns over attacks on places of worship, particularly in the northern region of the country.

The situation has drawn international attention, with countries such as the United States calling for improved security measures and stronger protection for vulnerable communities.

Security analysts warn that continued attacks on religious institutions could further heighten tensions and undermine public confidence in safety measures.

Investigations into the Cross River church attack are ongoing.
