Pupil attacks music teacher, stabs self

A heart-wrecking incident took place, today, Wednesday, September 24, as French police reported that they had taken into custody a 14-year-old student in the eastern town of Benfeld, close to Strasbourg.

Reportedly, the boy was accused of stabbing his music teacher during class. According to authorities, the 66-year-old teacher’s facial injuries from the attack were not life-threatening.

According to police, the teenager turned the knife on himself and stabbed himself several times when officers came to arrest him. He was airlifted to a hospital in Strasbourg after suffering cardio-respiratory arrest, where he is still receiving treatment.

According to the publication, the local gendarmerie stated that the motive for the stabbing has not yet been determined. Elisabeth Borne, France’s Minister of Education, declared she was going straight to the scene of the incident.

The student had been having academic difficulties, and the school had already mobilized its educational team to give him extra support, a spokesperson for the education authority told AFP.

Jacky Wolfarth, mayor of Benfeld — a town of about 6,000 residents — described the stabbing as an “isolated” incident.

Teachers’ representatives expressed concern over the attack, while acknowledging that student violence has become an increasing issue. Jean-Remi Girard, president of the SNALC teachers union, said: “We know that pupils can sometimes go crazy,” pointing to the long-term effects of Covid-19 lockdowns on students’ mental health.

However, he cautioned against extreme measures, noting: “There is no miracle solution. We’re not going to equip our schools with metal detector gates.”

The stabbing comes amid a string of violent incidents in French schools in recent months, which has led some institutions to implement bag checks at their entrances.
