JUST IN: Fear Grips Nekede As Residents Raise Alarm Over Alleged Fulani Herdsmen Attack Plot

“Residents of Nekede and Owerri are on edge after a reported night ambush and a viral social media alert claiming an imminent attack. Authorities yet to respond.”

Fear has tightened its grip on residents of Owerri and neighbouring communities following widespread reports of a potential coordinated attack on Nekede in Imo State. The concern stems from a disturbing incident along the Nekede–Amaze Road on Tuesday night, where armed men allegedly ambushed commuters, leaving the community rattled and heightening regional tension.

Anxiety escalated further on Wednesday morning after a viral alert shared on X (formerly Twitter) by an account identified as Chibuenyi (Don Machiti) and reposted by user @GeorgeOha34227. The alert claimed that an “imminent attack” was allegedly being planned, stating that armed groups had reportedly received orders to infiltrate Nekede within “one to two weeks.” The post further alleged that the suspected assailants had been receiving supplies and ammunition over the past week, with reinforcements purportedly arriving from neighbouring locations.

Authorities have not issued any official statement verifying these claims. However, the viral alert has already triggered significant panic among residents, many of whom were still unsettled by the purported ambush the night before. Some community members took to social media to describe unusual motorcycle movements and unfamiliar faces spotted around the outskirts of Nekede, observations that have fuelled speculation and deepened public fear.

Eyewitness accounts of the Nekede–Amaze Road incident suggest that the attackers emerged from a bushy section of the route, firing shots into the air before targeting commuters. While details remain unclear, several motorists reported that people fled into nearby bushes to avoid harm. Unconfirmed reports indicate that a number of individuals may have sustained injuries during the chaos.

For many residents, the fear now extends beyond the Tuesday night incident. The viral post claiming that attackers planned to “overrun” the community has caused widespread alarm. Local traders, families, and students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede have begun holding informal discussions on possible evacuation strategies if security agencies fail to intervene promptly.

A resident who spoke anonymously described the level of panic as unprecedented.
“People didn’t sleep last night. The gunshots were real. We don’t know what is coming next, but the government needs to act fast. We can’t pretend everything is normal,” he said.

Imo State has witnessed a rise in security concerns in recent years, including sporadic clashes, kidnappings, and attacks by various armed groups. The latest alert has intensified fears of a potential escalation if security agencies do not respond swiftly. Many residents are now calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State Police Command, and military formations in the state to assess the situation and deploy adequate personnel to vulnerable areas.

Despite the widespread alarm, some commentators have cautioned the public against reacting hastily to unverified social media posts. They warn that misinformation could worsen panic and strain community relations. Nevertheless, residents argue that, given the history of security challenges, ignoring warnings could also be dangerous.

In the absence of an official government response, rumours have continued to spread. Several residents have shared unverified voice notes, photographs, and videos allegedly showing armed individuals gathering near bush paths in Nekede. Though their authenticity remains uncertain, the psychological impact has been immediate. Commercial activities have slowed, with some shops opening late, and streets that typically bustle with movement now witnessing reduced traffic.

Students living in off-campus hostels near isolated areas said they feel particularly vulnerable. Many are urging authorities to increase military patrols along critical points such as the Nekede–Amaze axis, Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, and other surrounding communities.

The tension has also spilled into Owerri metropolis, where residents fear a possible ripple effect if the alleged threat materialises. Calls for heightened vigilance, improved surveillance, and rapid-response mechanisms have dominated discussions on local radio stations and community forums.

Security analysts warn that a communication gap between authorities and the public could fuel greater anxiety. They emphasise that transparent and timely updates are essential to prevent misinformation from filling the void.

As the community awaits official clarification, Nekede remains on high alert. Many residents are monitoring developments closely, watching for unusual movements, and hoping that proactive measures will be taken before any potential threat materialises.

As night falls once more, the community stands at a critical point—balancing fear with hope. The silence from authorities is becoming increasingly unsettling, and residents pray that decisive action comes before tension spirals out of control.
