Mob Kills Suspected Thief Near Ariaria Market, Sparks Night of Panic in Aba

Panic and tension engulfed the SAMEC area near the Ariaria International Market, Aba, on Tuesday night following the brutal killing of a man accused of theft. The incident, which occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., threw the bustling commercial zone into confusion as traders and residents struggled to comprehend the violence that unfolded.

Eyewitnesses and business operators told reporters that the unidentified man, believed to be from the northern part of Nigeria, was allegedly caught attempting to steal within the SAMEC vicinity. According to them, “luck ran out on him” when vigilant residents and traders apprehended him. What began as an attempted arrest quickly escalated into a mob attack, during which he was reportedly beaten and stoned to death before security personnel or medical help could intervene.

As of the time of filing this report, the Councillor representing Ariaria Ward 09, Hon. Christopher Nnabude, had visited the scene in a bid to calm rising tension among residents and traders. He appealed to the relevant authorities to immediately evacuate the remains of the deceased, stressing that swift action was necessary to restore normalcy and prevent further unrest in the already tense environment.
