Tension grips Abia as Labour Party lawmakers allegedly clash over ₦1 billion reportedly disbursed by Governor Alex Otti. One lawmaker injured in the brawl as he calls for accountability.

A violent altercation reportedly broke out among members of the Labour Party (LP) caucus in the Abia State House of Assembly over the sharing of money allegedly disbursed by Governor Alex Otti.

Reportedly, an appreciation from the Governor, for the passage of the Abia State Supplementary Budget, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the Majority Leader, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, allegedly attacked his colleague, Hon. Akachukwu Ucheonye, with a beer bottle during a heated argument, leaving him with a deep head injury and a severe concussion.

The incident occurred at the Aba residence of Hon. Fyne Ahuama, where LP lawmakers had gathered to deliberate on the alleged distribution of funds. Tension escalated when Hon. Ucheonye — who chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget, and Planning — reportedly demanded a larger share, arguing that his committee played a “critical role in driving the budget process.”

His comments allegedly infuriated Hon. Kalu, sparking a violent confrontation that left Ucheonye bleeding profusely.

Sources revealed that the injured lawmaker was rushed to a nearby private clinic for urgent treatment and later discharged to rejoin his colleagues on a state-sponsored trip to London, reportedly costing taxpayers nearly ₦1 billion.

The clash has deepened internal divisions within the LP caucus, with reports suggesting that some disgruntled members are already plotting to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers over allegations of misappropriation and misconduct.

As of press time, the Abia State House of Assembly has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians have taken to social media to express outrage over what they described as “shameful conduct” by elected representatives. Others have accused Governor Otti of allegedly “using cash inducements to buy loyalty from lawmakers,” calling for greater transparency and accountability in Abia’s governance.
