‘Don’t Let My Husband Die in DSS Custody’, Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Begs Court

According to a report by Vanguard News, Favour Michael Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed to Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja High Court not to allow her husband die in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In an open letter addressed to the judge, Mrs. Kanu faulted the medical report presented in court by a panel of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which claimed that her husband was not in any life-threatening condition and could stand trial.

She described the report as “unethical and misleading,” alleging that it was “not genuinely conducted by the NMA but fabricated by the DSS.” According to her, Kanu remains critically ill and urgently needs proper medical attention outside the DSS facility — preferably in a reputable hospital within Abuja.

Mrs. Kanu accused the DSS of subjecting her husband to “inhumane treatment and torture,” adding that his health had continued to deteriorate since his “extraordinary rendition” from Kenya. She urged the court to prioritize his well-being, reminding Justice Omotosho that he had earlier emphasized that Kanu must be “alive and healthy” to face trial.

Expressing disappointment over what she described as “delays and indecisiveness” in the ongoing proceedings, Mrs. Kanu lamented that what was initially promised as an “accelerated hearing” had turned into prolonged stagnation.

She pleaded with Justice Omotosho “not to betray the confidence reposed in his integrity,” warning that any continued neglect of her husband’s worsening health could “amount to a death sentence in detention.”
