Enugu Man Arrested Over Alleged Murder of Girlfriend, Body Found in Toilet

A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, after her decomposing remains were reportedly discovered inside the toilet of his apartment.

Police said the victim’s decomposing remains were found wrapped in nylon and locked inside the toilet of the suspect’s apartment. The suspect allegedly confessed to hitting her with a pestle during an argument over HIV infection allegations.

The suspect was arrested on September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., after he was reportedly rescued from an angry mob by police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division.

The arrest followed information that the suspect had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.

According to the police, preliminary investigation showed that the incident occurred on September 19, 2026.

The suspect allegedly killed the woman, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.

However, the offensive odour from the decomposing body reportedly attracted the attention of neighbours.

The neighbours subsequently forced the door open and apprehended the suspect before the arrival of the police.

The victim’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary, where they are being preserved pending an autopsy.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime, according to the police.

He reportedly told investigators that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

According to the police account, the suspect said he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle during the argument.

The blow allegedly resulted in her death.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.

The police said the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

The suspect is also expected to be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
