By Elizabeth Austin, Lagos

A severe fire broke out in the early hours of Friday, August 16, 2024, at a seven-storey building located at Sanni Adewale Street, Lagos Island Local Government Area.

The incident sparked widespread alarm, but fortunately, the swift intervention of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service prevented any loss of life.

According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze began around 05:17 hours and rapidly spread throughout the building, impacting multiple shops and causing distress among residents.

However, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call and promptly deployed firefighters from Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations. The firefighters arrived at the scene by 05:33 hours and quickly contained the situation.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was sparked by an electrical fault.

“Thanks to the swift actions of the Lagos State Firefighters, the situation is now under control. Ventilation efforts are currently ongoing to ensure the safety of all in the area.”

“Our team responded rapidly and effectively, and we are relieved that no lives were lost,” Adeseye said.

“As the situation stabilizes, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to monitor the area to prevent any rekindling of the flames.

She further noted that more investigations would be conducted in their quest to ascertain the full extent of the damage and the precise cause of the fire”.

“We urge residents to take necessary precautions to prevent fires and to report any incidents promptly.”

Meanwhile, the fire impacted several shops within the seven-storey building, causing substantial damage and disruption to business owners. However, thanks to the prompt response of the firefighters, the situation was brought under control, and ventilation efforts are currently ongoing to ensure the safety of all in the area.

The incident highlights the importance of fire safety and prevention measures. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has urged residents to take necessary precautions to prevent fires, including ensuring that electrical appliances are properly maintained and that combustible materials are kept away from heat sources.

In addition, the service has reminded residents of the importance of having functional fire extinguishers and ensuring that emergency exit routes are clear. By taking these precautions, residents can help prevent fires and ensure their safety in the event of an incident.
