NUJ South-East Urges SEDC, Governors to Tackle Insecurity, Erosion, Roads

The South-East continues to face serious development and security challenges, from worsening erosion to poor internal roads and insecurity. The NUJ South-East Zone C has now urged the region’s leaders and the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to take stronger and faster action.

The NUJ South-East Zone C has called on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and governors in the region to address insecurity, erosion, poor internal roads and other development challenges. The union also urged the SEDC to make full use of its budgetary allocations and the region’s economic potential.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), South-East Zone C, has urged the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and governors in the region to take urgent steps to address insecurity, erosion, poor roads and other development challenges confronting the zone.

The call was contained in resolutions reached at the end of the Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting held at Golphin Hotel, Awka, Anambra State.

The meeting was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku, and attended by chairmen and secretaries of the five NUJ state councils in the South-East.

On the SEDC, the Council urged the commission to fully activate its mandate and make effective use of available budgetary allocations.

It also called for greater investment in the economic potential of the South-East to address the region’s infrastructure and development needs.

On security and regional governance, the NUJ ZEC urged the South-East Governors Forum to strengthen cooperation among member states.

According to the Council, stronger collaboration would help the region attract more federal projects and support from development partners.

The union also called on the governors to act more swiftly in addressing security threats across the South-East.

Similarly, state governments were urged to rehabilitate internal roads across their respective states.

The Council noted that better internal roads would reduce pressure on major highways. It would also improve rural-urban connectivity and boost economic activities across the region.

NUJ South-East Raises Alarm Over Erosion

The communique also highlighted the growing threat of erosion in parts of the South-East.

The Council called on governments at all levels to urgently release funds for erosion control projects.

It stressed the need for sustained action to protect communities and infrastructure threatened by the environmental problem.

In addition, landlords were advised to adopt eco-friendly building practices that would help reduce environmental damage.

Residents were also urged to keep their surroundings clean as part of efforts to promote public health and environmental sustainability.

The NUJ South-East ZEC said the resolutions reaffirm its commitment to promoting development, security and the overall wellbeing of people across the South-East geopolitical zone.
