Grandfather Allegedly Buries Newborn Alive to Conceal Unmarried Daughter’s Childbirth

A heartbreaking tragedy has sparked outrage in India after a newborn baby boy was allegedly buried alive by his own grandfather in a desperate attempt to hide the birth of a child born to an unmarried daughter. The shocking discovery came only after villagers reported hearing the infant’s cries, leading authorities to uncover a case that has left an entire community in disbelief.

What began as unusual cries heard in the darkness ended in the discovery of a tragedy that has shocked India. The alleged killing of a newborn baby by a close family member has raised fresh concerns about the stigma surrounding pregnancies outside marriage and the devastating consequences such social pressures can have.

A newborn baby boy was allegedly buried alive by his maternal grandfather in Nandgaon village, Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, India, to conceal the birth of the child born to the family’s unmarried daughter. Police recovered the baby’s body after villagers reported hearing cries, while an autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Police in India have launched an investigation after a newborn baby boy was allegedly buried alive by his maternal grandfather in an attempt to conceal the birth of the child to the family’s unmarried daughter.

The disturbing incident reportedly occurred in Nandgaon village, located in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh.

According to police, the baby’s maternal grandfather, identified as Dharasingh Madavi, allegedly buried the infant shortly after birth.

Authorities further alleged that the man later attempted to take his own life by consuming pesticide. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital and remains in critical condition.

The alleged crime came to light after residents reported hearing the cries of a newborn baby during the night. Concerned villagers alerted the village sarpanch—the elected head of the local council—who convened a community meeting to address the disturbing reports.

During the meeting, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker reportedly disclosed that the family’s unmarried daughter had been pregnant for some time. The revelation prompted villagers to notify the police.

Investigators said they received the report on July 31. However, due to heavy rainfall and poor visibility, authorities were unable to exhume the baby’s body until August 1.

The infant’s body was later recovered from a manure heap in the presence of a magistrate, medical personnel and police officers.
According to investigators, a piece of cloth was found tied around the baby’s mouth and neck during the recovery.

Police said they suspect the infant may have been suffocated before being buried. However, they stressed that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after a post-mortem examination.
