A heartbreaking tragedy has thrown an Abia community into mourning after five members of the same family were found dead inside their home several days after they mysteriously disappeared from public view. As grief and speculation spread, police have launched an investigation while awaiting autopsy results to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shocking incident.
Five members of the same family were found dead inside their residence at Umuimo Village in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State after neighbours raised concerns over their disappearance. The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of death.
Five members of the same family have been found dead inside their residence in Umuimo Village, Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State, in a tragic incident that has left residents in shock and mourning.
The victims were reportedly last seen by neighbours on Saturday, July 18, 2026. However, after several days without any sign of the family, concerned residents became alarmed and began making enquiries about their whereabouts.
Their decomposing bodies were eventually discovered on Wednesday, July 22, after worried neighbours and relatives forced their way into the apartment when repeated knocks and attempts to reach the occupants proved unsuccessful.
Residents disclosed that the bodies were found in the family’s sitting room. The scene reportedly suggested that they might have been eating shortly before the tragedy occurred.
This has fuelled speculation that the deaths could have resulted from food poisoning or fumes from a power generator. However, authorities have stressed that the actual cause of death remains unknown pending the outcome of investigations.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
According to her:
“Yes, the attention of the Osisioma Divisional Police Headquarters was drawn to the incident on 22/07/2026 by the brother of the deceased, who reported that after being unable to reach Kachi Nnabugwu, they proceeded to his residence at Umuimo Village, Osisioma Local Government Area.
“Upon arrival, repeated knocks yielded no response. They subsequently forced entry into the house, where they discovered the lifeless and decomposing bodies of their brother and his family.
“The crime scene has been visited. A preliminary visual inspection of the bodies was conducted, and photographs were taken.
“The corpses have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”
The tragic discovery has sent waves of grief across Umuimo Village and neighbouring communities, with many residents anxiously awaiting the outcome of the police investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
