89-Year-Old Imo Man, Son Face Execution After Spending 10 Years in Prison Over 2016 Case

At 89, Pa Everestus Okereke has spent about a decade behind bars and is now facing execution alongside his eldest son, as questions remain over the 2016 incident that changed their lives.

Pa Everestus Okereke, 89, and his eldest son, Ugochukwu, are reportedly facing execution after spending about 10 years in prison over a 2016 case in Imo State.

At 89, Pa Everestus Okereke has spent about a decade behind bars in Imo State and is now facing execution alongside his eldest son, Ugochukwu, following a 2016 case that has recently attracted renewed public attention.

Okereke and his son were reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in September 2022, years after a fatal incident involving another relative.

According to reports by Arise News and Galaxy TV, the case began in 2016 when a fight in Imo State resulted in the death of a man.

Reports said Okereke’s younger son was allegedly involved in the incident and fled afterwards. He has reportedly remained missing since then.

Instead, Okereke and his eldest son were detained in connection with the case and have remained behind bars for about 10 years.

The prolonged imprisonment has now brought renewed attention to the elderly man and his son, particularly because Okereke was about 79 years old when he entered custody and is now 89.

Prison evangelist Christian Chuka recently highlighted their situation while speaking on Arise News, raising concerns about the length of time the father and son have spent in prison and the circumstances surrounding the case.

Chuka’s account, as reported by Arise News, stated that Okereke’s younger son fled after the fatal confrontation, leaving his father and older brother in detention.

Galaxy TV also reported that the younger son has remained missing since the 2016 incident.

The case raises questions about what happened after the fatal fight and how Okereke and his eldest son came to spend about a decade in custody.

However, several details remain unclear from the reports currently available to the public.

These include the precise charges for which Okereke and Ugochukwu were convicted, the evidence presented during their trial, whether they appealed the death sentence and the present legal status of the case.

Galaxy TV also noted the need to establish the legal status of the two men.

What remains undisputed from the reports is the length of time Okereke has spent behind bars.

He entered custody at about 79 and is now 89, meaning that roughly 10 years of his later life have been spent in prison.

His eldest son, Ugochukwu, has also reportedly spent the same period behind bars.
