A family tragedy has taken a legal turn in Ondo State after a 23-year-old man, Akuade Samuel, was arraigned for allegedly killing his mother, Akuade Olufunke, with a cutlass.

Samuel was arraigned before Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi on a charge of murder.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 6, 2026, around noon at the Power Line area of Ore, Ondo State.

The prosecutor, Taiwo Oniyeye, told the court that Samuel allegedly used a cutlass to cut his mother’s neck.

The injury allegedly resulted in her death.

The charge stated, in part: “That you, Akuade Samuel, on the 6th day of August 2026, at about 12 noon, at Power Line area, Ore, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, unlawfully used a cutlass to cut the neck of your mother, Akuade Olufunke, which resulted in her death.”

The alleged offence was said to contravene Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Meanwhile, the prosecution asked the court to remand Samuel.

The prosecutor said the remand was necessary to enable the prosecution forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

However, counsel to the defendant, A.D. Obademi, opposed the immediate application for remand.

Obademi urged the court to grant a short adjournment to allow him to file an affidavit in response to the prosecution’s application.

Following the arguments, the court adjourned the matter until August 31, 2026.

The case will come up on that date for hearing of the application for remand.

Samuel remains an accused person, and the allegation against him has not been established by the court.
