17-Year-Old Mother Allegedly Killed With Hammer by Baby’s Father in KwaZulu-Natal
A 17-year-old mother is dead after her family says she was allegedly attacked with a hammer by the man who fathered her one-year-old child, despite earlier warnings of abuse.
The Mnafu community in Mthwalume, on South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, is mourning the death of 17-year-old Mbali Lantu, a teenage mother whose life was allegedly cut short by the man who fathered her one-year-old child.
Mbali’s family says she was attacked with a hammer, leaving them devastated and struggling to come to terms with her death.
According to relatives, the teenager had allegedly experienced physical abuse during her relationship with the suspect before the fatal incident.
The family recalled one previous episode in which the man allegedly assaulted Mbali and dragged her towards a railway line. The incident reportedly left her injured and prompted her relatives to urge her to seek help from the authorities.
Mbali subsequently opened a case against the man and obtained a protection order, according to her family.
However, relatives say they later lost track of the progress of the case. They also allege that the suspect was released and that Mbali eventually returned to the relationship.
The circumstances surrounding the earlier case, including what happened after the protection order was obtained, remain unclear and would need to be established by the relevant authorities.
Following Mbali’s death, her family is demanding justice and calling for swift action against anyone found responsible.
The case has also triggered grief and anger on social media, with many people using Mbali’s story to draw attention to the dangers faced by young women experiencing domestic and gender-based violence.
For her family, however, the tragedy is deeply personal. They say they had previously seen warning signs and tried to encourage the teenager to seek protection.
The suspect has not been convicted of the alleged killing and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The allegations against him remain subject to investigation and the legal process.
