Why Lagos Police Suspended Rape Probe Against Pastor Chris Okafor
Lagos Police Explain Suspension of Rape
The Lagos State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding the suspension of its investigation into multiple rape and related allegations against Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry.
Famous Reporters gathered, via PREMIUM TIMES, that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State initially ordered a full investigation into the allegations and directed the cleric to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.
However, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, later transferred the matter to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Mr Sylvester Alabi, for further investigation.
Providing an update on the development, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Ms Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed that the command temporarily halted its investigation after complainants failed to honour multiple police invitations.
Ms Adebisi further clarified that the command could not conduct a parallel investigation while the case was already being handled by the Zone 2 Command under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun.
She explained that the cleric was released on personal recognition to allow the IGP-monitored investigation at Zone 2 to proceed without interference.
“There has not been further investigation from the command,” Ms Adebisi said. “He was invited and honoured our invitation, but we later discovered that similar petitions were already being investigated at Zone 2. Consequently, the Commissioner of Police directed us to halt our probe.”
She added:
“All the complainants we invited refused to show up. For now, we are not pressing further. We are awaiting the conclusion of the Zone 2 investigation. At that point, we will determine the next line of action. He was released on self-recognition to report to Zone 2 for further investigation.”
Backstory
The controversy surrounding Pastor Okafor began in December 2025, following allegations by Nollywood actress Doris Ogala, who accused the cleric of reneging on a promise of marriage and allegedly ruining her life.
Ms Ogala claimed the alleged betrayal caused her severe emotional distress, alongside other allegations that sparked widespread public outrage.
The situation escalated when Pastor Okafor issued a public apology to Ms Ogala and other women he claimed to have offended. He also accused his former wife, Ms Bessem Okafor, of adultery.
Ms Bessem denied the allegation, maintaining that she remained faithful throughout the marriage. She, in turn, accused the cleric of subjecting her to physical abuse.
Amid mounting allegations and public scrutiny, Pastor Okafor announced that he would step aside from his ministerial duties for one month.
