Shock in Imo as Gunmen Kill Traditional Ruler, Burn Victims in Brutal Community Attack

“Fear and grief have gripped residents of Imo State following a horrifying attack that claimed the life of a traditional ruler and five others, in what locals describe as one of the most brutal assaults in recent times. The shocking incident has reignited concerns over rising insecurity in Nigeria’s southeast region.”

“Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler, Paulinus Ekwuemeu, and five others in Ochia Community, Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo State, Nigeria. Police say the attackers struck on April 10, prompting a tactical response and ongoing investigation to apprehend those responsible.”

The traditional ruler of Ochia Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Paulinus Ekwueme, has been “killed” by suspected gunmen in a deadly ambush.

The monarch was reportedly attacked at the boundary between Assa and Ochia communities on Friday, April 10, shortly after returning from an overseas trip earlier in the week.

In the same ആക്രമation, the assailants also “killed” five other individuals whose identities have yet to be confirmed, further deepening the tragedy that has thrown the community into mourning.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said in a statement issued on Saturday that the attackers stormed the community on Friday afternoon, unleashing violence on residents.

According to him, “Police authorities received a distress report from the Ohaji Police Division at about 4:30 p.m., indicating that the community was under attack.”

He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Audu Bosso, swiftly responded by deploying tactical police units and operational assets to the affected area.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police immediately mobilised and dispatched tactical teams to the scene at Assa, where operatives recovered the burnt corpses of the deceased,” Okoye stated.

“The remains have been evacuated and deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, for preservation and autopsy,” he added.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that a “comprehensive investigation” has been launched, with intensified operations underway to track down the perpetrators.

“Adequate security measures have also been emplaced to forestall any future occurrence of such a tragic incident in the area and its environs,” he said.

In a show of solidarity, Commissioner Bosso, alongside members of his management team, visited the community to reassure residents of the police’s commitment to restoring calm and maintaining a sustained security presence.

He also commiserated with the families of the victims, assuring them that law enforcement agencies would continue to safeguard lives and property while intensifying efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

Residents were further urged to support ongoing investigations by promptly reporting any suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies.
