Senate approves N200m compensation for Family of 2 year old killed by stray bullet fired by NDLEA official in Delta

The sum of N200 million has been approved for the family of the 2-years-old baby, Ivan Onose Omhonrina, who was accidentally shot de@d during a raid on a notorious drug joint by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Delta State on July 13, 2023.

The Senate gave the approval during the plenary today, when the matter came up following a petition submitted by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Senator Neda Imaseun.

Part of the petition read thus:
Imaseun urged the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to “take over the investigation, prosecution of officers involved in the shooting and killing of Ivan Onose Omhonrina, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.”

Continuing, he said: “3. Also urge the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and all other Law Enforcement Agencies to provide regular training and sensitisation programmes for their officers on the appropriate use of firearms, conflict resolution de-escalation techniques and respect for human rights.

“4. Mandate the committee on human rights to ensure that the family of Onose is adequately compensated for their loss and report back within 6 weeks.

“And 5. Also mamdate the Committee on National Intelligence to effectively monitor the activities of law end agencies including regular evaluation, reviewing incidents and recommend appropriate action to prevent similar occurrences and report back within 4 weeks for further legislative actions.”

Late Onose and his younger brother, Eronmosele, were shot at their mother’s shop when NDLEA operatives raided the drug joint at Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

Famousreporters.com reports that on July 13, 2023, the tragic incident occurred around the deceased’s mother’s shop during the said raid by some NDLEA operatives.

The stray bullet fired by one of the officers hit Onose’s abdomen and brushed his brother, Eromonsele’s eye.

The victims were rushed to the FMC for surgery but sadly, Ivan could not survive it.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers observed one minute silence for the deceased and then moved for a N200 million compensation to be paid to the family.
