Pst. Igbeaku Orji says the importance of the ICT in the present day’s Journalism cannot be overemphasized.

Speaking in an interview with Famous Reporters, in Umuahia, the impacts of the ICT on journalism profession, Pst. Orji, a renowned Abia based Journalist maintained that there would scarcely be any aspect of Journalism in the 21st century that could thrive without the ICT.

Speaking further, he said:

“Gone are the days when news gathering and transmission were done using the analogue and manual methods. Today, all the aspects of mass media are based on the knowledge of the ICT”, he said.

The pastor at Deeper Life Bible Church and a a prolific weiter pointed out that the advent of the social media had breached the gap between the time of gathering information on and dissemination, adding “however, anything that has a positive side also has a negative side. It’s just that the positive effects out weighs the negative, it becomes a norm”.

He lamented that the major challenge of the social media was the obvious absence of regulation of media, noting that “it is an all- comer’s affairs. As a result, anybody can print whatever he wants people to know about”.

He regretted that social media practitioners lacked the principle of objectivity which is pivotal in the field of Journalism, as he enjoined internet users to be methodical in absorbing information as acquired from the social media.

Hear him: “It’s completely devoid of objectivity which is one of the major virtues of traditional journalism. It’s too subjective to become true. That’s why everyone has to verify before accepting any information. Due to its subjectivity instead of objectivity”, he explained, as he charged social media users to embrace professionalism.
